We will have some additional program options becoming available in the spring for beginners to intermediate-level sailors running throughout the late spring/summer 2023 season. \nQ: What if I miss a class?\nA: We do not have any make-up classes planned; however\, the instructors are really great about summarizing previous lessons and helping you feel as though you are caught up with important information. \nQ: What if the weather is not very good?\nA: Rain or shine we will go out on the water. If there is a lack of wind during the on-water sessions\, we will still proceed as we can cater the lesson to cover plenty of hands-on experience topics. If there is lightning or a storm\, we will contact the participants and inform them of a new plan or refund. \nQ: Who should we contact with any questions?\nA: Email sailingschool@kelownayachtclub.com

SUMMARY:Safe Boating Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Join us in recognizing Safe Boating Awareness Week\, a national initiative dedicated to promoting safe and responsible boating practices as we head into the summer season. We encourage all members and those in our community to take a moment to review key safety guidelines before heading out on the water. \n\nSafe Boating Awareness Week highlights several important reminders that help protect everyone on our waterways: \nKey Boating Safety Tips\n\nWear Your Lifejacket: Over 80% of boating‑related drowning victims were not wearing a lifejacket—making this the single most important safety action you can take.\nBoat Sober: Alcohol and cannabis impair judgment and reaction time. Always designate a sober operator.\nTake a Safety Course: Whether you’re new to boating or experienced\, continuing education strengthens your skills and decision-making.\nPrepare for the Unexpected: Check the weather\, ensure your equipment is in good condition\, and be aware of cold‑water shock risks.\nFile a Float Plan: Let someone on shore know where you’re going and when you plan to return.\nUse an Engine Cut‑Off Switch: A simple yet vital device to keep you safe should you fall overboard.\n\nFor more information and resources\, visit our Boating Safety page. \nLet’s work together to keep our waters safe\, enjoyable\, and accessible for everyone this season.

DESCRIPTION:Basic Cruising Standard · Sailing Certification \nHave you always wanted to become a competent crew or skipper? The Basic Cruising course is for you! We offer two options for students\, depending on your comfort level and strengths. \nBasic Cruising – Competent Crew\nStudents who have limited sailing experience will learn the ins and outs of cruising without the pressure of taking total control of the boat. You will move through the course at a pace you are comfortable with and learn how to be an asset on any sailboat! The Sail Canada Basic Crew Standard will be awarded to our Competent Crew students upon successful completion of this course. \nBasic Cruising – Day Skipper\nStudents who have prior sailing experience and are looking to take control of the boat will be working on crew and skipper skills during the course. You will take on more responsibility with the goal of being confident and competent to handle the boat after the course on your own with a small crew. The Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard will be awarded upon successful completion of the course to students who are comfortable taking full responsibility for the vessel. \nThe Sail Canada Basic Crew Standard \nBasic Cruising Standard\nAge: 15 +\nPrice: $875\n2026 Dates: \n\nBasic Cruising Course 1 – April\n \n\nTuesdays: March 31\, April 7\, 14  |  6:00 PM  – 9:00 PM  |  Classroom Sessions\nSundays: April 5\, 12\, 19 |  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM  |  Sailing Session\n\n\nBasic Cruising Course 2 – May  \n \n\nTuesdays: May 12\, 19\, 26  |  6:00 PM  – 9:00 PM   |  Classroom Sessions\nSundays: May 17\, 24\, 31  |  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM  |  Sailing Session\n\n\nBasic Cruising Course 3 – June\n \n\nTuesdays: June 2\, 9\, 16 |  6:00 PM  – 9:00 PM  |  Classroom Sessions\nSundays: June 7\, 14\, 21  |  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM  |  Sailing Session\n\n\nBasic Cruising Course 4 – September\n \n\nTuesdays: September 8\, 15\, 22  |  6:00 PM  – 9:00 PM   |  Classroom Sessions\nSundays: September 13\, 20\, 27  |  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM  |  Sailing Session\n\n\nBasic Cruising Course 5 – October \n \n\nTuesdays: October 6\, 13\, 20  |  6:00 PM  – 9:00 PM   |  Classroom Sessions\nSundays: October 11\, 18\, 25  |  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM  |  Sailing Session\n\n\nBasic Cruising Course 6 – November \n \n\nTuesdays: November 3\, 10\, 17  |  6:00 PM  – 9:00 PM  |  Classroom Sessions\nSundays: November 8\, 15\, 22 |  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM  |  Sailing Session\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included:  \n\nCourse textbook\, study materials\nAshore and afloat instruction\nLogbook\, exam and certification\nPleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)\n\nHave questions about these courses?  Contact the KYC Sailing & Watersport Education Team directly at sailingschool@kelownayachtclub.com. \nPricing does not include GST\, which will be applied to all adult courses.
