Once More Around the Pale Blue Dot with Bill Norrie

Bill Norrie is a classic example of the meme “old mountaineers go to sea”. He is a retired Alberta physician and life time mountaineer, having moved to Victoria in 2019 for and Cathy to be close to their sailing yacht SV Pixie in which to cruise the Pacific North West. Cathy and Bill circumnavigated in their previous yacht SV Terrwyn following the West about “Coconut Milk trade wind route”, over five years from 2011-2016. They then purchased SV Pixie, a 28 ft. Bristol Channel Cutter, with Cape Horn and the Southern Ocean in mind.

Bill left Victoria in September 2019 on his solo voyage, bound for The Horn and rounding in December. He then carried on eastward via Cape Town and Christchurch, NZ and around the world, returning home exactly one year later on September 2, 2020.

The pandemic and Covid happened while in the middle of his Southern Ocean sojourn, re-emerging at Christchurch to a changed world. Bill’s wife, Cathy, convinced the New Zealand authorities to allow a reprovisioning stopover making him New Zealand’s only international visitor and a harbinger of post-Covid times yet to come.
