IMPORTANT PROGRAM UPDATE

It is the priority or the Kelowna Yacht Club Sailing School to protect health and safety and respect BC Health Authority guidelines. We have updated our programs and policies to reflect a safe and fun environment for kids to experience the joy of watersports:

  • 2:1 ratio to encourage smaller courses to give more one on one instruction and to maintain social distance
  • All courses keep in mind updated Health and Safety Guidelines
  • Updated Waivers to include precautions and requirements surrounding COVID
  • Students come ready and do not need to change clothes
  • Students carry their own equipment (water, hat etc.) to minimize contact
  • Safe and Fun is our motto

Ever dreamed of sailing around the world? Or pictured yourself out on the water, relaxing with the breeze in your face as waves rock gently below. Now’s your chance to learn to sail. We offer a variety of courses for members and the public. Each course will keep you learning and moving forward with your sailing skills. You’re never too old to learn, and have fun doing it.You can learn to sail on a 25-foot keelboat with no experience necessary!

Maritime Radio Course

The Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures and everyday operating techniques.

Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words, and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS).

All mariners, including recreational boaters, will want to take advantage of the many features and capabilities of this innovative form “automatic” radio. Secure your lifeline. Be sure that you and your family take the Maritime Radio course.

This complete package will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) with the DSC Endorsement exam which is included as part of these courses. To operate a maritime radio, you need the certificate. It’s the law!

This is a self-study program with an in-classroom exam.

Introduction to Sailing - Keelboat

Learn to sail on a 25ft keelboat. Taught by Sail Canada certified instructors, each session has a maximum of four participants with two days spent out on the water. No experience is necessary, and you can learn at any age. the knowledge you will learn is very valuable and will help you get to the next level, Basic Cruising Standard. *Some flexibility regarding dates.

Basic Cruising Standard

Scheduled classes run from March to October, however classes are available from November through to February by request.

In this complete sailing course, you will become autonomous and learn all about terms & definitions, gear & equipment, safety, Canadian regulations, weather, duties of the skipper and crew, seamanship, maneuvering under power, handling under sail, making fast and snugging down. Taught by Sail Canada certified instructors; each session has a maximum of four participants. You will work towards your Basic Cruising Standard certification.

Learn or perfect your skills with a Sail Canada Certified Instructor. A great way to have fun on the water while learning a wonderful sport or improve your sailing techniques to enjoy even more of your time out there! All abilities learn or perfect your skills on our 25ft keelboat. Lessons are available all year round.

Tours available year-round! Enjoy the beautiful Okanagan Lake for a special date night, or get out on the water with a small group of friends or family. Make your private tour special with booking a sunset tour or lunch picnic on the lake.
