Commodore Eva Aylward and the Board of Directors invite you to join them for the 2020 Sailpast!
One of the Kelowna Yacht Club’s longstanding traditions is Sailpast, whereby the Commodore is honoured by the Members of the Club. This tradition allows the fleet to be inspected by the Commodore and is accomplished by the fleet passing in front of the Commodore’s Flagship; giving and receiving a salute from the Commodore. Every year, the practice and history of Sailpast is performed by thousands of yacht club’s around the world.
With the health and safety of our members and community our number one priority, we are working to plan a safe, socially distanced event, in accordance with all Federal and Provincial health authority mandates and recommendations. Although this year’s event will look a little different, we are excited to move forward with this tradition.
• Breakfast | In the effort to ensure we follow all guidelines regarding gatherings, we will not be able to have our usual breakfast in the Member Lounge. Our team will be on the Commodore’s dock ready to serve coffee & breakfast in a safe manner to members who will be participating in Sailpast. Registration is required.
• Ceremony | The ceremony will take place, however a bit different than past years. The ceremony will be on the upper patio of the Clubhouse, which can be viewed from your vessel in the basin. In addition, the ceremony will be streamed live on FaceBook and can be watched directly from your mobile device. If you would prefer to watch the ceremony from the promenade, we kindly ask that you continue to maintain 6ft distance from others, and respect those around you.
• Sailpast | The tradition of the Club’s fleet passing in front of the Commodore’s flagship will take place once again this year. Following the ceremony, vessels will head out onto the water and follow their designated fleet captain to begin the Sailpast. We ask that only those who reside in your household or are in your “social bubble” join you on your vessel.
• Reception | As this portion of the event does not allow us to maintain 6 ft distance from others, we will be unable to move forward with the traditional reception that follows the Sailpast. Those who will be taking part will receive a reception-style package as they proceed to their boat to enjoy following the event. Registration is required.
To ensure the safety of all, we ask that all who attend the event to please follow posted signage and maintain distance from others.
