Get Ready for Winter

As the summer sun fades, it’s time to prepare your vessel for cozy winter moorage. To ensure a seamless transition, we kindly request all Kelowna Yacht Club members who are leaving their boats in the basin complete the Winter Moorage form. By providing your preferences and requirements, we can allocate slips promptly and plan essential maintenance. You can also have our certified Marine Mechanic winterize your boat, or have our team perform weekly boat checks over the winter.

Things to Know about Winter Moorage

Heaters

For any boats that have not yet been winterized members may use a heater (that complies with moorage regulations) in their boat that they will check regularly as temperatures may drop below freezing

Below is the Club’s policy on heaters.

POL_OP044 Club Moorage Policy

23. As per the National Fire Protection Association Guidelines, whereas it is recommended that portable heaters are not used on boats when the vessel is unattended, Members using portable heating devices for temporary use or otherwise, are using them at their own risk and should consider the following when purchasing a portable heater. The heater shall be:

  • CSA Approved (or UL),
  • Energy Efficient – self-regulating and has an antifreeze setting,
  • Non-tipping,
  • Designed with Spark Protection
  • No Open Flame
  • Always be used as specified by the manufacturer, and
  • in accordance with the Moorage Regulations, must not be Reflective, flame, or be oil-burning type heaters unless the Member is in attendance.

A and B Docks

Vessels on A and B docks are at risk of freezing during the winter. The Club will reassign your moorage location for the winter season. Our moorage coordinator will provide you with a temporary over-winter slip for you to move your vessel into. The Club will move any vessel not moved by the member at the member’s expense.

Winterization at KYC

The KYC Marine Mechanic will book your winterization upon completion of this form. The rates for winterization listed below are in effect for the 2025 season.

Basic Winterize – Outboard Motor $230
Basic Winterize – Single Inboard Motor $310
Basic Winterize – Twin Engine Inboard Motor $615
Basic Winterize – Sailboat Inboard $280
Water System $75 – $150
Air Conditioning $75
Generator $75
Oil Change $145 + oil + filter expenses

 

 

Boat Show

All slips on docks A through D and on F dock will be utilized for the Kelowna Boat Show that is held annually at the end of April. If your moorage is located in that area, you will be reassigned to a different slip for the winter.

Winter Moorage at KYC

If your vessel will be remaining in the basin during this time period, the Winter Moorage Agreement form must be completed.

Secondary/Emergency Contact

This contact should be someone that is willing and able to make decisions on your behalf about your boat in the event of an emergency, and when you are not able to be reached.

Insurance

As per the Club’s Moorage Policy, Current annual proof of insurance in the assigned Moorage Member’s name showing a minimum of $2 million liability or industry standard is required for the vessel to be in the KYC Basin.
